My Covenant from St. Paul's Summerville on Vimeo.
I am the vine;you are the branches.
If you remain in me and I in you,
you will bear much fruit;
apart from me you can do nothing.
If you do not remain in me,
you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers;
such branches are picked up,
thrown into the fire and burned.
John 15:5-6
A description of the New Covenant (Jer. 31:31-34, Hebrews 8:8, 10:16) taken from the NIV Study Bible:
“An unconditional divine promise to unfaithful Israel to forgive her sins and establish his relationship with her on a new basis by writing his law ‘on their hearts’ a covenant of pure grace.”
God’s love for you is unconditional. It isn’t contingent upon you filling out this document, working harder to be holy, or completing a religious to-do list. The Father loves us so much that He sent His Son to die the death that we, in our sinful natures, deserve. He has paid the price, and you and I receive all the joy and blessings of being reunited with our Creator.
As we allow this truth to be written (or re-written) on our hearts, profound gratitude naturally follows. And out of a grateful heart, comes the desire to grow in Christ simply because we want to. We want to know Him more. We want to be closer to Him. We want to give our lives to Him.
It is here that we begin our 2012 Covenant journey. Out of gratitude for this New Covenant of Pure Grace given to us in Christ – we, in response, commit ourselves anew to Him. We want to grow in Christ.
The prayer on the back of the document was written to help you enter into a conversation with the Lord about your 2012 Covenant. Please take it home and pray it this month. Let it be a starting point for more prayer. Ask God what area He’d like you to grow in. Take time to be still and listen and trust that God wants to talk to you. Jot down any Scriptures that come to mind and any thoughts of what you believe the Lord is asking you to promise to in 2012. Enjoy this time between you and the Lord. Let Him speak words of peace and love over you.
Then, when you feel ready, write your Covenant to God by using the “Letter to God” tear-off strip. You’ll find a few sentences there to start you off, but this is your letter, your promise to God. Use your own words – no fancy language needed. Be as simple or as in-depth as you feel God is calling you to be. Let it be personal and from the heart. No one else will read it. Don’t feel compelled to do many things… commit only to what you believe God is leading you to do.
May we enter this Covenant journey with sincere and thankful hearts. And may we grow in Christ in 2012 so that we may more and more Impact the World in His Name.
