Meals on Wheels, Inc.

Meals on Wheels of Summerville, Inc., is a community sponsored program which receives no Government funds. The program is not a United Way agency, but may receive individuals’ designated pledges through United Way’s Donor Choice. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

The purpose of Meals on Wheels of Summerville is to provide home-delivered, nutritious noon meal service for the elderly or others who are homebound, isolated, or incapacitated to the extent that good food preparation is impossible.

The meals are prepared, packaged and delivered from Ambler Hall kitchen which is leased from St. Paul’s Church. The Meals on Wheels office is also found at this location and is open 9 am to 2 pm, Monday through Friday. Mrs. Betsy Luke is the Executive Director.

MENUS are planned by the Executive Director under the advice of registered dietitians.

THE NUMBER OF MEALS DELIVERED DAILY at present is approximately 180. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday except for 6 holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. On Fridays, an extra cold bag meal also goes out to those who need the extra meal through the weekend.

THE BACKBONE OF MEALS ON WHEELS is its dedicated board members, working to assure continuation and expansion of the program, and the volunteers who deliver the meals, assist the cooks, pack the food and assist in other ways. Volunteers from the community and area churches are the lifeline of this program. Volunteer drivers deliver the meals between the hours of 11:30 am and 1 pm one day each week. The drivers graciously donate the use of their cars and gas as well. Kitchen volunteers also help one day a week from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Our Volunteer Coordinator is Mrs. Leslie Iannace.

PARTICIPANTS ARE REFERRED by agencies, churches, hospitals, physicians, and other interested persons. Each referral is screened by a member of the Meals on Wheels staff.

THE DELIVERY OF THE MEALS is accomplished by dividing the community into several routes serving the greater Summerville area and parts of Berkeley and Charleston counties.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? You can contribute funds and time and encourage others to participate. Contributions from individuals, churches, organizations and businesses make it possible for Meals on Wheels to provide meals for those who need our service. Urge your church or business to become a regular contributor to Meals on Wheels. $800 will serve one person for one year. Consider making Meals on Wheels a beneficiary in your will. Memorials can be given, with families being notified. Contributions of any amount are welcomed and are tax deductible. Checks made out to Meals on Wheels may be mailed to P.O. Box 592, Summerville, SC, 29484. Also, you can volunteer as a deliverer or kitchen helper by calling the Meals on Wheels office (873-8224). Also visit our Web site at  www.dycon.com/sville meals.

PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVES are available upon request to speak to groups or interested persons to provide further information. You may call the Meals on Wheels office for more information. Thank you for your interest and support.
